The study on isolation endophytic bacteria from tomato root (Solanum
lycopersicum L.) and test of their ability in degrading carbofuran has been
conducted. Eight bacterial isolates were obtained using Nutrient Agar (NA)
medium. The result showed that all isolates were able to use carbofuran as the
sole carbon source in Bushnell-Hass Broth (BHB) medium containing 2%
carbofuran. Two isolates (HS06 and HS08) were selected for further test to
determine their ability to degrade carbofuran using High-Performance Liquid
Chromatography (HPLC). The result of the test showed that both of the isolates
were able almost completely to degrade carbofuran. Isolate HS06 was able to
decrease the concentration of carbofuran up to 99.87% and isolate HS08 was able
to reduce carbofuran concentration up to 99.15% (original concentration of
carbofuran is 175.333 ppm). This result indicates that the presence of endophytic
bacteria plays an important role in degrading pesticide in plant tissue.
