Bioethanol is a product of sugar fermentation by yeast. Many strains of yeast have been isolated for their abilities to produce bioethanol. This study was conducted to isolate and to evaluate yeast potential from nira, tuak and laru from Nias Island in producing bioethanol from crop’s wastes such as potato, cassava and taro peel wastes. A total of 7 yeasts were isolated and tested for their ethanol tolerance. Two isolates, PN1 and PN2, showed the most tolerant to medium containing 15% ethanol. Both of these yeast isolates were used to produce bioethanol using fermentation medium containing 3% of waste powder for 5 days of incubation. The result showed that PN1 and PN2 in taro peel waste medium produced 0.64 and 0.60% of bioethanol, while their fermentation efficiency were 83.74 and 81.03%, respectively.en_US
