Keratin is an insoluble protein found in feather. Many microorganisms such as
fungi and bacteria have been isolated for their ability to degrade keratin.
Keratinolytic microorganism could be found in bird feeder animal such as
crocodile. This study was conducted to isolate and to evaluate keratinolytic isolate
potential in degrading keratin. A total of 10 bacteria were isolated and tested for
their abilities to produce keratinase on feather meal agar. Two isolates, FB2 and
FB6, showed to have the highest keratinolytic index of 2,09 and 1,96,
respectively. These two bacterial isolates were used to degrade keratin waste in
liquid medium with the addition of keratin waste (chicken feather and goat hair)
for 25 days of incubation. The result showed that keratinolytic bacterial isolates
degraded keratin waste. FB2 degraded chicken feather and goat hair by 54,4 and
51,9 %, repectively, while FB6 degraded both substrates by 71 and 32,3 %,
respectively.
