Snake like Python sp. can eat bird including its whole feather and excrete feces
with no feather left. It has been assumed that there are keratinolytic bacteria in the
intestine of snake. In this study an isolation and an assay of potential of
keratinolytic bacteria from feces of Python sp. has been conducted. A total of 10
bacteria were isolated and tested for their abilities to produce keratinase on feather
meal agar. Two isolates, FU7 and FU10, were selected based on keratinolytic
index for further study. Their abilities to degrade keratin were assayed in liquid
medium containing chicken feather and goat hair as carbon and nitrogen source
for 25 days of incubation. The result showed that FU7 degraded chicken feather
and goat hair by 62,5% and 35,9%, respectively, while FU10 degraded both
substrates by 56,9% and 19,2%, respectively.
