Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered species and one of their most viable habitat is Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) in northern Sumatra. Within the GLNP, secondary forest in Sei Betung resort is also considered as an important habitat for Sumatran orangutan and other species. In this secondary forest, orangutans were found roaming and nesting. The research entitled “Characteristic Of Nest Sumateran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) in Secondary Forest in Sei Betung Resort of Gunung Leuser National Park” was conducted from July to August 2014. The purpose of this research is to identify the characteristic of nest made by Sumatran orangutan based on nest class, nest position, nest altitude and nest tree. The result of the research shows that the nest classes is dominated by class D (24%) followed by class E (22%), class B (22%), class C (20%) and class A (12%). Percentage of the nest position is dominated by position 3 (46%) followed by position 2 (26%), position 1 (20%) and position 4 (8%). The altitude of nests ranges from 0-25m, with 54% is located at altitude of 6-10m , 28% is at 11-15 m, 9% is between 16-20m, 8% is 0-5m, and only 2 % is at 21-25 m. Characteristics based on the type of nesting tree found on 15 tree family and 27 tree species of which dominated by Euphorbiaceae (31%) and Lauraceae (11%). The most dominated species for nest making is Endospermum diadenum and Macaranga lowii.en_US
