    Abstract
Background: Most of chronic recurrent tonsillitis sufferers undergo tonsillectomy procedure. Among the post tonsillectomy morbidities, post operative wound healing is of utmost importance to be effectively managed as it will interfere with patient recuperation from surgery. Healing process in post tonsillectomy is by secondary intention with characterization of slough formation which ultimately will be replaced by re-epithelization. The degree of slough formation and re-epithelization would depend on patient’s factors, surgeon factors and operative theatre environment. Honey has been known to have beneficial effects on wound healing. It has been observed in clinical and experimental studies that honey not only prevents infections, but also decreases inflammation and provides more rapid tissue healing and epithelization. Use of honey in post operative period can promote faster healing, reduce post operative wound dehiscence and produce a very good cosmetic of healing. It has been shown to reduce complications such as post operative infection, pain and excessive fibrosis. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of honey on the wound re-epithelization in post tonsillectomy. Methods: An analytical study with experimental study design, the number of samples was 30 patients undergoing tonsillectomy and divided into three groups which is honey group, placebo group and control group. Standardized postoperative usual analgesic and antibiotic regimen were administrated for all patients, plus honey for honey group or plus placebo for placebo group. Honey or placebo were used by gargling after six hours postoperative and every six hours for 10 days. The wound epithelization was evaluated for 10 days using Ozlugedik’s epithelization grading system. Result: Honey was significantly had better effects for wound re-epithelization when compared to the placebo and control groups with p value <0,005 on days 4, 7 and 10. Wound healing was significantly faster in the treatment group compared to the placebo and control group (p value <0,005).
