Abstract

The composting of an Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) by mixing it with activated organic fertilizer (AOF) was an alternative in the utilization of solid waste produced from the palm oil mill. This research was to study the composting technique for EFB and to collect the degration data during composting of EFB with turning frequency in order to get a high quality compost. The composting process was started with cutting the TKKS into 1-3 cm in size before it was put into "Takakura" basket and then followed by the addition of AOF until the optimum moisture content of 55-65 % was reached. During composting, the MC was kept on the optimum condition by adding the AOF. The variations of mixing frequency were once a day, once in 2 days, once in 3 days, once in 4 days and once in 5 days. The parameters of temperature, MC, weight of compost, pH value, C/N ratio and the quality of compost were analyzed through the process. The outcome from this research proved that the mixing frequency affected the composting process and the compost was produced around ±40 days. The best degradation result of EFB was obtained for the once in 3 days mixing in which the value of pH, MC, WHC and C/N ratio were 9, 52,59%, 76% and 12,15, respectively.
