The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of agitation and volume of
starter on yield and concentration of bioethanol produced from Nira Aren (Arenga
pinnata Merr). Biocatalyst used was Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Observed variables
was starter’s volume and agitation speed in anaerobic fermentation condition. It was
started by preparing the starter and then followed by anaerobic fermentation process.
Then the fermented result was distillated at temperature of 88 oC. The results showed
that the higher starter volume and agitation speed, the higher concentration and yield
of bioethanol produced until it reached its highest point. Adding starter’s volume and
increasing the agitation speed beyond its highest point did not increase levels and
yield of bioethanol produced. The highest concentration and yield of bioethanol
produced in this study amounted to 47.618% (v/v) and 48.1411% was obtained at
35% starter volume with agitation speed of 100 rpm.
