The production of crude palm oil (crude palm oil, CPO) in Indonesia keep
increasing that also will increase the amount of wastewater that being generated.
Anaerobic pond technology had been developed, but the characteristics of palm oil
mill effluent had not met the effluent standards set by the government, especially
for COD. Therefore it is necessary to do further research on the treatment of palm
oil mill effluent from anaerobic pond with electrocoagulation technique.
Electrocoagulation was a method that capable of removing various kinds of
pollutants in water, the suspended particles, heavy metals, color, solution of soil,
and deflouridize water with an electricity into the system. This study aims to
determine the effect of the supply DC voltage to the electrocoagulation system
performance and determine the best time for the wastewater treatment from palm
oil plant. The type of electrode material used is aluminum, the dimension of the
reactor is 12 x 12 x 36 cm with the retention time of waste 3 hours, the distance
between the electrodes of 1.5 cm, supply DC voltage variation was 7, 8, 9, 10 and
11 volts with samples of the waste from PT. PP London Sumatra Mill at
Bagerpang. The results showed that the percentage reduction in COD, TS and TS
greatest was 73,76 % at 9V, 88.97% at 7V and 99.9% at 11V. The best COD
reduction reached at9V with operation time 60 minutes, reduction of TS was best
obtained at 7 V with operation time 180 minutes, but do not meet quality
standards, while the reduction in TSS was best obtained at 7 V with operation time
30 minutes and almost all met the quality standards for palm oil mill effluent
according with Kep MenLH No.5 2014 .
