dc.description.abstractPublic space is one of the important elements of the city in improving the quality of urban life both in terms of the environment, the community or city functions through the use of space in it. But in its development, public space is often misused. One of the example is the change in the function of the arterial road into a place for the street vendors. This research aims to explain how the street vendors use the public space as a freemarket and how they adapt / adjust with the market conditions. The type of research used is a qualitative research which methods are observation to obtain the field setting, behavioral mapping to obtain activity patterns that occur, and questionnaires / interviews to obtain social background of the users. Through a survey of the street vendors in “Pajak Bulan” Medan as a case studies , it can be concluded that in this region occurred in a variety of different activities at different times, and require different physical settings. However, the variety of activities have not been fully accommodated by the physical setting of the Pajak Bulan, so that users need to adapt in the form of direct action and mental adjustment.en_US
