In Indonesia, the incidence of non-infection/degenerative disease such as
hypertension, stroke, cancer and so forth is more and more increasing. Prevalence of
hypertension is determined based on the criteria of borderline hypertension, a blood
Pressure ranging from 140/90 to 159/94 mmHg which is estimated 4.8% - 18.8%,
Beside its high rate of prevalence, mortality caused by hypertension is rapidly increasing
in the society.
Several previous studies argue that hypertension can increase threefold the risk of
& coronary cardiac disease, while hypertension and hypercholesterolemia can nine-time
Increase the risk and it will increase up to sixteen-times in the person developing
hypertension and smoking (Bustan, 1997),
Like other areas in Indonesia, the district of Karo also has a quite high prevalence
of hypertension. The number of cases of hypertension in the district of Karo belongs to
the third biggest out of 10 biggest diseases in the past 3 (three) years, even, in the first
Guarter of 2006, there were 888 out-patient cases came to get treatment to the internal
disease polyclinic of Kabanjahe General Hospital
This observational study uses the case control study design with the person
furtering from hypertension as a case group and those who are not suffering. from
hypertension based on their disease history as a control group. The aim of this study is to
examine the factors influencing the incidence of hypertension in Kabanjahe, the distric
of Karo in 2006.
The result of study based on the bivariate analysis reveals that the consumption of cigarettes, alcoholic drink and less of exercises are of the risk factors to the incidence highest hypertension with their respective odd-ratios (OR) are consumption of meat has the highest OR (39,263], cigarettes (OR : 7,312), less of excises (OR = 2,805), and alcoholic (OR = 2,1). The Result of modeling reveals consuming meat are the most exercises, smoking and are the most influential factors of the incidence of hypertension.
