dc.description.abstractThis research describes the categorization and meaning of naming cafes in the city of Medan. The data used is written data. Data were collected using the look method. Then, the data were analyzed using the matching method and the agih method. The results are presented by formal and informal methods. The theory used is the natural semantic metalanguage theory. The results showed that the naming of cafes in the city of Medan is categorized into ten, is: place names, names of people, names of plants, names of animals, objects, nicknames, traits, actions, colors and numbers. ('if people think about something, people will go to this (X) place'). Next, the meaning of cafe naming is formed by the components of the original meaning of the summation, relational substantive, delimiter, space, descriptor, similarity, place, existence, property and specification, logical concept, mental predicate. From the original meaning element, a semantic component structure is formed (a) one type of place [X], (b) this place [X] is near/beside/front of something, (c) where [X] is large, (d) place [X] is like something, (e) in this [X] place there is something, (f) this [X] place has a MENU type, (g) people will go to this [X] place if they want to EAT/DRINK.en_US
