This study discusses grammatical cohesion as an aspect of discourse integrity in
the short story ( فِيْ سَنَةِ مِلْيُوْنَ (مِيْلاَدِيَّةٍ /fī sanati milyūna mīlādiyyatin/ “In a Million
Year AD”. The problem of this research is what types of grammatical cohesion
are found in the short story ( فِيْ سَنَةِ مِلْيُوْنَ (مِيْلاَدِيَّةٍ /fī sanati milyūna mīlādiyyatin/ “In a
Million Year AD” and determined the forms of substitution and ellipsis that used
in the short story. This study aimed to determined the types of grammatical
cohesion contained in the short story and to determined the forms of substitution
and ellipsis used. This research was library research with a qualitative approach.

Sumarlam's opinion, and Ni'mah’s Arabic cohesion theory. The data were in the
form of words, phrases, or sentences with grammatical cohesion tools collected by
listening methods and note-taking techniques and analyzed with descriptive
method. The results showed in this study were grammatical cohesion including
references, substitutions, ellipsis, and conjunctions with a total of 871 (eight
hundred and seventy-one), which consists of 754 (seven hundred fifty-four)
references, 13 (thirteen) substitutions, 6 (six) ellipses, and 98 (ninety-eight)
conjunctions. The substitutions were found to consist of phrase, noun, and clause
