    Abstract
    DALIMLINTE, MUHAMMAD. 2004. Modality in Angkola Language. This dissertation aims to investigate about: Typological modality, the meaning of modality, formulation of modality and the realization of modality in Angkola language. The research location was Bunga Bondar a village of Sipirok district in South Tapanuli, This was decided as the research location because it was found that this village is more people use Angkola language in daily life than the other villages such as Simaninggir in Sipirok district, the villages in Arse district : Hanopan 2, Huta Padang, Roncitan, Lancat. In this area the language is not relatively affected by other languages. This research used descriptive method with qualitative approach. The research data were spoken and written language. The spoken language was taken from the informants, The number of informants were decided by using purposive sampling, they are two customs figures and other four persons who are also native speaker of the language in the research location. The other data source is a folklore written in Angkola language. The method for data collection used interview method by recording the dialogue between the informants and the researcher. After the data had been collected, they were analyzed by applying Interactive model of qualitative analysis from Miles and Huberman, three flows were used: Data reduction, Data display, and Conclusion (drawing/verification). The research findings are (l).There are three kinds of modality in Angkola language: Epistemic modality (probability), Deontic modality (obligation), Dynamic modality (inclination). (2).The modality markers in Angkola language can be either modals or non-modals (lexical and particles), (3). Modals and non-modals (lexical and particles) that used in proposition can influence the meaning in Angkola language. (4).The Angkola language modality has its own formulation.
