Kecepatan Tumbuh setelah Terapi Besi pada Anak Penderita Anemia Defisiensi Besi di Sekolah Dasar Kecamatan Bilah Hulu Labuhan Batu

Abstract

Background. Iron supplementation in iron deficiency anemia (IDA) children could decrease the incidence of stunting in children. · Objective. To study the effect of iron therapy on growth velocity of iron deficiency anemia children. Methods. A randomized clinical trial study was conducted at Labuhan Batu on November 2006-Mei 2007. Iron deficiency anemia was diagnosed if there were anemia sign, Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC)<31%, Red cell Distribution Width (ROW) index>220 and Mentzer index>13. Elementary school children (6-12 years old) with IDA were randomly assigned to a daily therapy of 6 mg iron/kg/day or placebo groups for three months. The body height was evaluated before intervention and six months after intervention. Results. There were 125 children among 300 children recruited suffered IDA. After one month of iron therapy, the mean of hemoglobin concentration 12,4 g/dl in iron group and 11, 7 g/dl in placebo. There was significant increase of height in iron (129,9±7,58cm vs 132,2±7,23cm) and placebo (130,8±8,78cm vs 128,7±8,79cm) groups, but no significant difference on mean of growth velocity between placebo and iron groups (2, 1±0,01cm vs 2,0±0,9cm). Conclusion. There was significant increased of height, but no significant difference between groups on growth velocity
