Based on the result of preliminary survey conducted at Haji Hospital, Medan
in 2013, it was found out that the patients felt less satisfied with the performance of
the doctors. This poor performance of doctors is estimated to be related to doctors'
low self-motivation in providing health service.
The purpose of this explanatory survey study was to find out and analyze the
influence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on the performance of the doctors at
Hqji Hospital, Medan in 2013. The population of this study was 162 general
practitioners and specialist doctor and 62 of them were selected to be the samples for
this study. The data for this study were obtained through questioner distribution in
which the variables of motivation were assessed by the doctor and the performance of
the doctors was assessed by their respective superiors. The data obtained were
analyzed multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression statistic tests at a =
0.05.
The result of this study showed that there was the influence of intrinsic
motivation had influence on the performance of the doctors and extrinsic motivation
on the performance of the doctors. The extrinsic motivation was the dominant factor
influencing the performance of the doctors working at Haji Hospital, Medan.
It is recommended that the management of the hospital, in making its policy
about new compensation, should be careful, optimize the condition of doctors' job,
such as varied job promotions so that it will create favourable work environment and
optimize better function of supervision by medical committee in order to increase
doctors' performance
