    Abstract
Bandar Khalipah Health Center working area had the highest diarrhoea incidence of children under five among 31 health centers in Deli Serdang Regency. In 2004 there were 1433 cases or 12.2% of total number of cases in all health centers and third level of the top ten diseases. This study was aimed to improved the strategy to decrease diarrhoea incidence among children under five in Bandar Khalipah Health Center work area. This was matched case control study using 130 diarrhoea cases among under five years of age and 260 comparisons (non diarrhoea cases) from the same health center visitors from January to May 2005. The cases and the control were matched individually on age, sex, mother's ethnic and education. Sample cases were drawn randomly by method of systematic random sampling while the control by method of simple random sampling. The data was collected through both direct interview with the mothers and observation. The study was analyzed applying SPSS 10.0 program and the multiple logistic regression analysis. The result shows that there is a significant association between poor nutritional status of children and diarrhoea (adjusted OR = 2.806 ;95 % C.I. 1.690- 4.658 and p value 0.000), mother's low level knowledge about diarrhoea and diarrhoea (adjusted OR = 2.297 ;95 % C.I. 1.384 -3.813 and p value 0.001), low standard health of clean water and diarrhoea (adjusted OR = 4.095 ;95 % CI.2.477 - 6.771and p value 0.000) and insufficient mother's behavior about hygienic life and diarrhoea (adjusted OR = 3.899 ;95 % C1.2.349 - 6.472 and p value 0.000). Through MCUA,low standard health of clean water has the highest score of determinant for intervention followed by mother's knowledge on diarrhoea, mother's behavior about hygienic life, and improvement of children nutritional status, respectively.
