Background: Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure to create an artificial
airway (stoma) in trachea to facilitate breathing. Tracheostomy is one of the
most frequently performed surgical procedures in the critically ill patients.
Purpose: Knowing the description patients who underwent tracheostomy
procedure in HAdam Malik Hospital Medan 2006- 2010.
Methods: This study design is a descriptive study using case series design.
Sampling is a retrospective technique by colecting patients data who
underwent tracheostomy procedure in H Adam Malik Hospital Medan from
2006 to 2010 that obtained.from medical record
Result and Discussion: Tracheostomy procedure in H Adam Malik Hospital
Medan period of 2006-2010 were 83 patients, male (83,1%) and female
(16,9%). The most common age group was 46-60 year (36,1%), followed by~
61 year (32,5%), 16-30 year (13,3%), 31-45 year (10,9%) and ::; 15 year
(7,2%). The most common indication for tracheostomy was upper respiratory
tract obstruction (83, 1 %) that most caused by laryngeal tumour. The elective
tracheostomy (62,7%) is higher than emergency tracheostomy (37,3%). The
most common skin incision that used was horizontal incision (61,4%). Lower
tracheostomy was the most common done (38,5%). Surgical tracheostomy most
often performed by Otorhinolaryngology Department (88, 0%). Complication
rate was 43,4% with late complication due to thick secretions was the most
common complication. Decannulation was successfull in 14,5% of patients
with median rate 48 days
