    Ideology in Language Use of Daily Kompas and Daily Republika on Reporting The News of Indonesian Presidential Candidates of 2014

    Abstract
    This dissertaion entitled “Ideology in Language use of Daily Kompas and Daily Republika on Reporting the News of Indonesian Presidential Candidates of 2014”. This research is a qualitative/quantitative-descriptive in nature. It is a combination of critical discourse analysis (CDA) put foward by Van Dijk (1995) and appraisal theory (AT) by Martin & White (2005). The data corpus of the study consists of 64.000 words from 200 headline news of two national newspapers, Daily Kompas (DK), and Daily Republika (DR), which were taken during the official presidential election campaign period in 2014. The data are categorised based on the news of the presidential candidates in the two newspapers. The findings reveal that: (1) at the level of appraisal analysis: (a) at the engagement analysis: DR dominantly disclaim and deny the negative image about JW (32.47%) and PS (27.27%). DK also dominantly disclaim the negative image about JW (23.88%), and PS (16.42%) respectively. (b) At the attitude analysis: DK dominantly describes JW as an honest and reliable person (12.76%), and potrays PS as a capable, affectionate, and confident a leader (5.32%). DK dominantly describes JW as a firmed and assertive, simple, and populist(34.73%). PS’image is dominantly describeb as an unconfident, crazy, evil, and arrogant leader (5.56%). (c) At the graduation in attitude, Daily Republika up-scaled positive image of JW by 48 clauses (60%) and positive image of PS by 32 clauses (40%). Daily Kompas dominantly up-scale JW’s positive image by 35 clauses (58.33%), but more negative image of PS by 25 clauses (41.67%). At the graduation in engagament, Daily Republika dominantly up-scale JW’s positive image by 16 clauses (61.54%), and PS’ positive image by 10 clauses (38.46%). Daily Kompas dominantly up-scale JW’s positive image by 21 clauses (61.76%), but more PS’ negative image by 13 clauses (38.24%) (2) At the level of socio-cognitive analysis: at the thematic analysis: DR describes JW and PS more psotively with 40% and 38% respectively. On the other hand, DK describes JW more positively with46%, but PS more negatively with 29%. The themes of the DR’s headlines dominantly describes PS not responsible for the human rights violation (21%), and “Jokowi’s good characters (20%). The themes of the DK’s headlines are dominantly framed in JW’s being populist and good characters (25%), and Prabowo’s bad characters (11%). At the analysis of Us versus Them: DR dominantly de-emphasizes the negative image about PS, and empasizes the positive image about Jokowi. DK dominantly emphasizes negative image about PS, and de-empasizes the positive image about JW. (3) At the social analysis: DR and DK’s news reports are influenced by historical background, the ideological foundation and the powerful persons behind the newspapers.
