Hubungan antara Obesitas pada Anak dan Massa Ventrikel Kiri

Abstract

Background The presence of obesity has negative effects on cardiac function during growth which can increasing of cardiac dimension and cardiac mass as a result of higher stroke volume and cardiac output. Objective Determine the relationship between obesity and left ventricular mass (LVM) in children. The specific objective is to determine a conelation between the duration of obesity and left ventricular mass. Methods A cross sectional study conducted in Medan involved 30 obese and normal weight children aged 6 to 13 years old for each group from October 2011 until February 2012. Both of groups had undepone complete echocardiography examination to asses left ventricular mass and other left ventricular parameters. The measurement of left ventricular mass using Devereux fonnula. Results During the study, 65 participants underwent echocardiography. Five participants were excluded due to meet exclusion criteria (4 valve regurgitation, 1 echo drop at atrial septal). Left ventricular dimensions in obese and normal weight groups showed significant differences in the value of lVSd, IVSS, LVlDd, LVlDs, LVPWd, LVM and LVMI between both of groups (P=0.0001). The relationship between duration of obesity and left ventricular mass had moderate correlation and positive pattem (r= 0.407). Conclusion There was a significant difference in left ventricular mass between obese and normal weight children. The duration of obesity has a not so strong but significant relation with left ventricular mass
