Background: Acute Helicobacter pylori infection results in acute gastritis and may progress to chronic gastritis if treated improperly. There are many different clinical manifestations of H.pylori infection, particularly in the upper gastrointestinal tract, ranging from asymptomatic to peptic ulcers. However, up to 80 per cent of H.pylori colonization is asymptomatic. Nonetheless, infection can be determined by the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), where a higher ESR may indicate the presence of infection. Objective: This research aimed to investigate the relationship between ESR and H.pylori gastritis in pediatric patients. Method: This research was a cross-sectional analytical observational study of pediatric patients with recurrent abdominal pain in the gastroenterology polyclinic and inpatient ward at Universitas Sumatera Utara teaching hospital and the network hospitals between October 2020 and January 2021. Patients with cognitive impairment, history of malignancy, autoimmune diseases, pulmonary infections, and dehydration were excluded. All the research subjects underwent gastroscopy, CLO, and complete blood work for diagnosis. The relationship between H.pylori gastritis and ESR was analyzed by using Chi-square test. Result: There were 52 research subjects involved, where 32 patients were tested positive and 20 patients were tested negative for H.pylori infection. Meanwhile, 78.1 per cent of the H.pylori positive and 45.1 per cent of the H.pylori negative population had abnormal ESR levels. ESR and H.pylori infection were significantly correlated (p=0.015). ESR is frequently higher in patients with H.pylori infection. Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between H.pylori gastritis and ESR in pediatric patients.en_US
