The development of generators in producing electricity power is very diverse, one of them is the axial flux generator which is usually designed for low speed such as water and wind. Axial flux generators generally use permanent magnets to create a rotating field. The flux value of the permanent magnet cannot be adjusted which will cause a drop of generator voltage along the increase of the load. By adding an excitation system in the axial flux permanent magnet generators, the flux value can be increased by adjusting the DC current at the field coil, so that the generator voltage can be kept constant while there is a change in load. In this research, the design of axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) generators by adding an excitation system using a brush was carried out. The generator is designed with the power of 50 W, frequency of 50 Hz at 1000 rpm. This generator has single stator-double side grooves which are located between the two rotors. One of the rotors uses permanent magnets and the other uses a coil which is connected by a slip ring to transmit DC current from an external source. The test results without adding an excitation system, the maximum power generated of 18.83 W with a voltage of 11.1 V. Whereas by adding an excitation system, the maximum power generated of 47.81 W with a voltage of 17.6 V and the excitation current is given at 1 A. From the test results it was found that by adding an excitation system, the generator is able to keep a constant voltage up to a load resistance at 50 Ω.
