    Abstract
In this study, the authors discuss the function and meaning of the Toba Batak ethnic ulos Ragidup motif in semiotic studies. The purpose of this research is to describe the motifs found in Ragidup Ulos, to describe the functions of the motifs in Ragidup Ulos, and to describe the meaning of the motifs in Ragidup Ulos. The theory used to analyze the data from this study is a semiotic theory, namely symbols put forward by Charles Shanders Peirce. In completing this thesis the author uses qualitative methods. To find the results in this thesis, the authors use data collection methods, namely (1) direct interviews with informants, (2) observation, (3) documentation related to the object under study. The results found in this study are that there are 14 motifs in Ragidup ulos, namely Jogia, Batu Assimun, Sigumang, Pamaltahi, Pinarhalak Boru, Pinarhalak Bawa, Centipede-Cipede, Ipon-ipon, Rungkung Anduhur, Onda-onda, Flowers, Simakkat -akkat, boxes and signs. In addition to the type of motif, the function of the Ragidup ulos motif was also found, namely as a giver of strength to the owner of the ulos (according to the beliefs of ancient people), as a coolant for the owner of the ulos, giving enthusiasm to live life and providing motivation in realizing dreams. As well as finding the meaning of the motif that exists in the Ragidup ulos which means hagabeon (having many offspring), as a protective spell, giving authority and giving ingenuity. It can be concluded that the Ragidup ulos is a symbol of life, because the colors, paintings and patterns give the impression that the ulos is really alive. Ragidup ulos has three colors, namely white (purity), red (courage) and black (grief). Ragidup ulos has a length of 2 meters and a width of 1 meter. The author hopes that young people will preserve and recommend knowledge about the Ragidup ulos in the Toba Batak area
