Research on sailfin molly fish has never been done, so information on the
karyotype, pattern, shape, and size of the chromosomes of sailfin molly has not been
found. This study was conducted to determine the number of chromosomes and the
diversity of fish chromosomes. Methods performed with the descriptive method.
Samples were collected from fish vendors and brought to the Genetic and Biology
Molecular Laboratory to be acclimeted for 7 days. Fishes were administered by
Colchicine 0.007% for 12 hours to obtain a chromosome at the metaphase stage.
Preparation of the cell was done by solid tissue technique using organs in the form of
gills continued the process of coloring using Giemsa 5% and the observation of
preparation on a microscope with the help of an amscope. Karyotype data analysis
using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Ideokar 1.3 software applications obtained
chromosome pairs based on the shape and length of the chromosomes. In this study,
the Sailfin molly balloon fish chromosome was found with a total of 42 chromosomes,
or 21 pairs of metacentric-shaped chromosomes on 19 chromosomes and
submetasentric on 2 chromosomes. Largest long arm chromosome 12.06; short-arm
chromosome 9.3 with a total number of 21.36 in the ratio of chromosomal arms of 1.76
with a relative length percentage of 9.95 chromosomes and a percentage of
chromosome shape of 1.76 and a centromere index of 0.49
