A selective school dental health program (UKGS) is conducted in elementary schools in which its sixth grade students have got the third phase of school dental health program (complete UKGS) including required comprehensive dental health services. Based on the preliminary study from the data of 2003 in Kotamatsum public health center (2003), there were only l 6% of sixth grade students who had completed dental care, it means that effective demand of dental health service is very low. This was the main reason why this study is proposed. This study is aiming at understanding the affecting factors of need and demand of sixth grade elementary school students in benefiting dental health services in the work region of Kotamatsum public health center. This is an explanatory research study. Samples were taken purposively by selecting respondents from three elementary schools receiving complete dental health services. Total respondents are l 15 sixth grade elementary school students and dental health providers at public health center as dental health school programs organizer. Data collecting derived from questioners and interviews completed by the students and the program executors. Tooth examination was performed to observe evaluated need and effective demand of filled, cxtnictcd tooth and periodontal status. Statistical analysis was carried out by using chi square test to observe the correlation among perception and belief of students, mother's education factor, student's father occupation with evaluated need and effective demand of dental health services as well as students' perceived need about their dental health problem with effective demand of received dental health services. The result reveals that perception and belief of students significantly relate to evaluated need and effective demand. The low perception and belief gives low motivation for students to maintain and care their dental and oral health. Perceived need of student<; is significantly affected the effective demand of dental health services. The effective demand does not match with the evaluated need, where the percentage and average number of filled tooth is low compared to extracted tooth, and indicated extracted tooth and periodontal status are also still very low. In conclusion, the result of selective school dental health program has not reached the targets and objectives of the school dental health program (UKGS). It really needs an improvement on the service system, Health Service Office and Public Health Center should give more serious attention in conducting the program.en_US
