Occupational stress is the emotional, physical and behavioral disorders
resulted from occupational condition which is not appropriate with ability,
resources and expectation. If it is not properly managed, it will reduce
occupational motivation and decline individual performance. A nurse is a
profession with high risk for occupational stress. (The objective of the research
Was to discover the nurses’ occupational stress index in Inpatient Installation at
Dr. Pirgadi Hospital, Medan, ENSS (Expanded Nurse Stress Scale) was used as
the measurement method. It is an occupational stress measurement instrument
specified for nurses. The nurses’ occupational stress index is obtained by adding
the total score of each item of statement which was then transformed into score
range of 100. The population was the nurses working in the Inpatient Installation
at Dr. Pirngadi Hospital, Medan i.e. 250 people. Among 150 nurses measured,
most of them had occupational stress index at moderate level. The higher the
occupational stress index is, the higher the nurses’ stress level will be. The
stressors which gave most contribution to occupational sires index were facing
patients’ death and dying, having problems with doctors, having emotional
maturity, having problem with workmates, having problems with Subordinate!
Ward Head, having workload due to unclear procedures, having stressor from
patients and their family, and being discriminated.
