Based on the data of 2008 - 2009 dr. Pimgadi General Hospital Medan, the
incident rate of nosochomial infection in the in-patient ward of its surgery
department was 25.4% and in the operation room the rate reached 36.2% of the
patients out. It was predicted that one of the factors causing the high incident rate of
nosochomial infection is related to the performance of the working nurses and
nosochomial infection prevention.
The purpose of this explanatory survey was to analyze the influence of
personal and psychological factors on the performance of the nurses in preventing
the incident of nosochomial infection in the in-patient ward of the surgery
department, dr. Pimgadi General Hospital Medan in 2010. The population of this
study were all of the 35 nurses working in the in-patient ward of the surgery
department and all of them were selected to be the samples (total sampling). The data
for this study were obtained through questionnaire-based interview and the data
obtained were analyzed through multiple regression tests at a= 0.05.
The result of this study showed that statistically the variable of individu factor
(age, education, and length of service) had significant influence on the pe,:formance
of the nurses in preventing nosochomial infection (p<0. 05), while the variable of sex
did not have any influence at all. The psychological factor (perception, attitude,
personality and motivation) had significant influence on the performance of the
nurses in preventing nosochomial infection (p<0.05). Education was the most
dominant influencing variable.
The management of dr. Pimgadi General Hospital Medan is suggested 1) to
improve the role of Nosochomial Infection Prevention Committee as a facility to
develop and control the performance of the nurses in minimizing the case of
nosochomial infection in either the patients or the health workers, 2) to make an
education and training on nosochomial infection prevention for junior nurses,
especially those who are working in the in-patient ward of its surgery department,
and 3) to make a standard operational procedure (SOP) on nosochomial infection
prevention referring to the SOP issued by the Ministry of Health, the Republic of
Indonesia
