Synthesis of silica material from oil palm shells as a source of silica and glycerol as a template has been carried out. Silica was extracted by the alkaline method using NaOH solution. Silica powder obtained is white by adding a template in the form of glycerol with variations in weight of 2 g, 4 g, 6 g. A mixture of silica and glycerol was calcined at 600°C for 3 hours and then characterized by FT-IR, XRD and BET analysis. The FT-IR spectrum of silica from oil palm shells shows the presence of Si-OH and Si-O-Si groups. The results of the XRD analysis have widened diffraction peaks which indicate that the silica material is amorphous. BET analysis results of palm shell silica showed pore size, pore volume and surface area of 10.21 nm, 1.168 cc/g and 18.617 m2/g, respectively. Preparation of silica material with variations in the weight of the glycerol template, namely 2 g, 4 g, and 6 g. The BET analysis results showed that the surface area was 20.043 m2/g, 29.274 m2/g, 34.695 m2/g, the pore volume was 0.0695 cc/g, 0.1144 cc/g, 0.0714 cc/g, respectively. and pore sizes of 6.68 nm, 7.81 nm, 4.12 nm respectively which belong to the mesoporous size.en_US
