    Abstract
Background: Diabetic retinopathy is one of microvascular complication in diabetes mellitus (DM) that causes varying degrees of severity in the retina and choroidal thickness due to apoptosis in the vasculature of the choroid. Objective: To determine the relationship between diabetic retinopathy and choroidal thickness in type-2 DM with and without diabetic retinopathy assessed using SD-OCT. Method: This is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design conducted at the Universitas Sumatera Utara Hospital from February to April 2023. A total of 34 case subjects with diabetic retinopathy and 34 control subjects without diabetic retinopathy were studied. Choroidal thickness was manually examined using caliper tool of SD-OCT. Statistical analysis using chi-square, T-independent, kruskal-wallis and mann-whitney test. A test result is meaningful if the value of P<0.05. Results: Average choroidal thickness was 232.26±35.54μm in the case and 262.94±30.23μm in the control (P<0.001). The thickness of the choroid was thinner in proliferative subjects, with an average value of 195±12.11μm compared to non-proliferative subjects, who had an average value of 247.79±29.99μm (P<0.001). The thickness of the choroid was thinner in Proliferative subjects that were suffering from ≥5 years of DM, with an average value of 197.22±10.46μm, while non-proliferative subjects that were suffering from ≥5 years DM showed an average value of 234.1±25.46μm (P<0.001). Conclusion: Choroidal thickness was reduced in type-2 DM subjects with diabetic retinopathy compared with controls.
