This research aims to describe the background of the use of dysphemism in the environmental discourse of flooding in North Sumatra and to describe the sociocultural dimensions in the environmental discourse. This research uses Allan and Buridge's dysphemism theory and Norman Fairclough's theory of sociocultural dimension analysis. This descriptive qualitative research uses the free listening method with note-taking technique in collecting the data. To analyze the data, this research uses method of agih with direct element division technique and replace technique, and method of padan with referential pairing technique. The results of this research show the use of dysphemism in the discourse of environmental flooding in North Sumatra in the online mass media Waspada.id, Medanbisnisdaily.com, Waspada.co.id, Orbitdigitaldaily.com, and Analisadaily.com in the form of words, phrases, or sentences with various backgrounds of use. The five online news portals use words, phrases, and sentences in the form of dysphemism with a background to show dislike or disagreement with someone or something, a negative portrayal of someone or something, express anger or annoyance, show disrespect or demean someone, make fun of, denounce, or insult, exaggerate something, blaspheme or criticize, and show something of low value. The environmental discourse of flooding in North Sumatra in the online mass media Waspada.id, Medanbisnisdaily.com, Waspada.co.id, Orbitdigitaldaily.com, and Analisadaily.com can be analyzed using the sociocultural dimension, namely by looking at the situational, institutional, and social levels in each news report.
