dc.description.abstract | Nowadays, many people do not know the origins of the name of the area they live
in. Therefore, research was conducted which aims to identify the meaning of the
toponymy of the villages, identify the categorization of the toponymy of the
villages, and identify the cultural values contained in the toponymy of the villages
in North Tapanuli District. This research is included in the qualitative descriptive
research. Primary data in this study were obtained from interviews, while
secondary data were obtained from articles to public records. The methods used
are not only interviews and literature studies but there is also a referential
equivalent method that sorts out the determinants as differentiators. Beginning
with data collection, then categorizing the data into three aspects, namely (1)
embodiment aspect, which consists of the form of water, the appearance of the
earth, flora, and fauna; (2) social aspects, which consist of politics, economy,
tradition, community, and community leaders; and (3) cultural aspects, consisting
of myths, folklore, and religion. Apart from village categorization, research was
also conducted on the cultural values contained in the names of villages in North
