Dari Kereta Lembu Menjadi Kendaraan Bermotor: Pergantian Moda Transportasi di Desa Nangbelawan Kecamatan Simpang Empat Kabupaten Karo (1950-2010)

Abstract

The bullock cart was a means of transportation that was present at Nangbe/awan village in 1950. It was used as a means to transport villagers' crops to the market center in Kabanjahe and between places or areas. The development of transportation facilities had made the villagers switch to use motor vehicles in 1990. The presence of motor vehicles was able to expand the marketing area and improve their economic condition; this causes oxcarts to disappear and be used as a tourist vehicle due to its uniqueness and it is rarely found in this modern era. This study aims to describe the use of oxcarts for transportation during the period 1950-1990, to find out the background of the transition.from oxcarts to motor vehicles and the use of motor vehicles at Nangbelawan Village. The data collection is carried out by visiting the village, the Village Office Chief, the Office of Karo BPS (Central Bureau of Statistics Statistics), the Library of Karo Regency, and the USU Library. Then, the verification is conducted by the researcher through interpretationof data source to get the conclusion. The results indicate that after the transition from oxcarts to motor vehicles, the villagers' life became much different in various aspects compared with the previous condition such as activities and the economic. In terms of activities,they find it easier to carry out farming and other activities. It alsohelps them transport a lot of goods, make it easier for them to travel for long distances and shorten travel time to remote areas. In terms of the economy, it makes economic activities easier, such as the distribution of goods. Since the existence of a Center of Economic Excellence in an area will trigger transportation development in that area.
