This research using Krech's theory of emotion classification is part of literary psychology, specifically explaining the classification of the emotions of guilt, harbored guilt, self-punishment, shame, sadness, hatred, and love in the main characters Poniem and Leman. In this way, various emotions are depicted that drive the actions of the main characters in their lives.
The novel Merantau to Deli by Hamka becomes the object of research which is analyzed through continuous and meaningful reading to produce a well-classified identification of emotions. Each text is identified on the structure of the novel and the emotions felt by the main character. The separate identification results in the structure of the novel and the emotions felt by the main character result in the statement that the seven classifications of emotions in Krech's theory are experienced by the main character with different quality and quantity. Poniem has had a lot of sadness, starting from before he met Leman until he married Leman. Then the hatred that Poniem feels comes from his loyalty being betrayed, his pride being treated arbitrarily, and his patience being mocked. In contrast to Poniem, Leman's most prominent emotions are guilt, harbored guilt, and love. Leman has a lot of guilt because he cheated on his wife who sincerely loves him and treats and divorces his wife very roughly. His mistakes that cannot be easily redeemed make Leman constantly harbor feelings of guilt due to his own actions. This happened because Leman is the type of person who has a love that is volatile and explosive.
