Aksesi Negara Timor Leste untuk Menjadi Anggota Asean pada Tahun 2022

Abstract

Becoming a member of ASEAN is a mandate of the law for Timor-Leste, and for that reason, Timor-Leste has long been pursuing accession to become a member of ASEAN, since gaining independence on May 20, 2002. The year 2022 was a historic year for Timor-Leste's accession process to become a member of ASEAN. The 40th-41st ASEAN Summit in Cambodia officially designated Timor-Leste as a prospective member of ASEAN. This research aims to investigate the process of Timor-Leste's accession to obtain prospective membership in ASEAN. The research is conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach, which aims to provide a detailed description of the related phenomenon. The research collects data through observation, document analysis, and interpretative analysis to understand the phenomenon being studied. Descriptive qualitative research is often used to describe complex social phenomena and understand how these phenomena occur from the perspectives of the individuals involved. The findings of this research indicate that Timor-Leste has employed open diplomacy and bilateral diplomacy in the process of accession to become a member of ASEAN. It started with an open declaration of its desire to become a member of ASEAN and then proceeded to cooperate with the ASEAN member states. The efforts made by Timor-Leste to become a member of ASEAN since gaining independence finally achieved a significant milestone in 2022, with the official designation of Timor-Leste as a prospective member of ASEAN in that year.
