| dc.description.abstract | At first smoking was an activity of burning and smoking tobacco rolls wrapped in
palm leaves or paper, the smoke was then introduced into the body through the
mouth and then exhaled. Along with the times, smoking is no longer just in the form
of rolls but with a device that converts liquid into vapor through hot temperatures
called electronic cigarettes (vape). This study aims to find out how the shift in
conventional smoker culture is changing to electric smokers (vape) among students.
This research was conducted at the University of North Sumatra. Informants in the
study are: USU students from several faculties and e-cigarette (vape) entrepreneurs.
Research data collection techniques are observation, in-depth interviews, literature
studies, and documentation. The analysis method used is qualitative with a
descriptive approach The results showed that there was a change in conventional
cigarettes to electronic cigarettes (vape) due to several reasons, namely: health
factors, economic factors, environmental factors and also social media factors. The
shift in conventional cigarette culture to electronic cigarettes is also inseparable from
social changes that occur in society, namely lifestyle, that lifestyle is a characteristic
of a modern world or what can also be called modernity. The point is that anyone
living in modern society will use the idea of lifestyle to describe his own actions as
well as those of others. Lifestyle is also used to show our existence in the
environment This is also related to the use of electronic cigarettes in the social
environment. There are some people who consider people who smoke using
electronic cigarettes (vape) more up to date and cool than people who smoke with
