Abstract

Analysis of the Meaning of Tattoos as a Media of Social Expression Case Study The Meaning of Tattoos as a Lifestyle Trend in Popular Culture in Medan City. The phenomenon of tattoos is a work of art that has long existed and developed in the world and even in Indonesia. People who wear tattoos are considered synonymous with criminals, diggers, and naughty people. Especially the group of people who live on the streets and are always considered to disturb the peace of society. Tattoos or tattoos are currently growing rapidly until now tattoos have turned into a lifestyle in popular culture. The meaning of tattoos is very different, each individual defines various kinds of tattoos and with different images. The method used in this research is descriptive with a qualitative approach. Determination of informants using interview techniques, by interviewing 10 informants, namely 9 key informants and 2 additional informants. Presentation of data refers to the theory of phenomenology to show the meaning of tattoos as a medium of social expression. The results of the study show that the process of recognizing someone with tattoos can come from various sources such as: the media, both print and electronic, and from friends who then become a reference for wearing tattoos. The meaning that emerges from the user of the tattoo as a result of their interaction: tattoos as an expression of feelings, artistic expression, religion and as an identity and tattoos as a symbol of memories. The forms of treatment received by tattoo users are very diverse, both from family, friends and society. Not a few of them get discrimination from people around them or get negative labels from people around them.
