Using hijab among young people especially college students has changed, where previously the hijab worn was still an ordinary hijab combined with modern clothing such as jeans, cullotes, skirts, blouses, shirts, t-shirts and other as. This time, some muslim students in Medan had changed their style to use syar’i hijab. Syar’i hijab is a long dress that covers the entire body except for the face, and hands to cover their aurat in accordance with Islamic law. This change in dress style is a form of self-discovery, or also known as self-concept. Self concept is process an individual’s to knowing or looking at herself. The research “Self-concept of Syar’i Hijab Users (Studies on Muslim Students in Medan)” aims to find out how self-concept of Muslim students who use the syar’i hijab in Medan. In this research, used theory looking glass self forward by Charles Horton Cooley. This Study used qualitative methods with descriptive approach. Data collected techniques observation and in-depth interviews. Results of the study show that self-concept Muslim students get from the results of responses from other people to the syar’i hijab they wear. The response can be positive or negative. The positive response that students get is that they are more respected by other people, especially men because students who wear the syar’i hijab confine relationship with men. Their clothes look tidier, polite and look more pious because their clothes are more closed. Students who wear the syar’i hijab are considared muslim woman who are more obedient to their religious obligations compared to other muslim women because they can maintain their hijab, though this time come up various types and models of hijab that are more modern. The negative response that students get is their clothes looks like old womans clothes because size is bigger than other muslim womans clothes, and there are students who wear syar’i hijab but their attitudes do not reflect their clothes, like still not confine relationship with men. If the response the students gets is positive response, then the self-concept will be positive. Conversely if the response is negative, then the self-concept becomes negative.en_US
