The farming community is one of the groups of people who have various limitations
in Indonesia. These limitations can be seen from narrow land ownership, weak
capital, uneven use of modern agricultural equipment, weak control, still dependent
on natural conditions, and so on. This problem is also owned by the farming
community living in Dusun IV, Batukarang Village, Payung District, Karo
Regency. The condition of the Batukarang farming community living in these
problems has led them to the trap of poverty. So that in the increase of time the
farming community who are classified as poor will be vulnerable to various
domestic shocks, one example is the increase in the price of Fuel Oil. Fuel as a non renewable Natural Resource plays a vital role in meeting the basic needs of the
community. This study aims to see a picture of the welfare and survival strategies
of the farming community in Dusun IV, Batukarang Village as a result of frequent
fuel price increases in Indonesia. The main informants in this study were four
farming communities living in Dusun IV, Batukarang Village, key informants
namely the Village Head and one of the Chairmen of the Batukarang Village Farmer
Group, and an additional informant namely a grocery store trader who worked in
Batukarang Village. Data collection techniques are carried out by literature study,
observation, interviews and documentation. The data obtained in the field are
analyzed qualitatively so as to obtain conclusions. The results of this study show
that the welfare condition of the farming community in Dusun IV, Batukarang
Village is getting worse amid the increase in fuel prices. This condition can be seen
in eight welfare indicators such as population, health and nutrition, education,
employment, consumption levels and patterns, housing and environment, poverty,
and social. The survival strategy of farming communities in the midst of rising fuel
prices is divided into three, namely active strategy, passive strategy and network
strategy
