dc.description.abstractThe lungs are respiratory organs connected to the respiratory and circulatory systems. Like other human body organs, the lungs are susceptible to various diseases. There are diverse types of diseases that can affect lung health. COPD is defined as lung inflammation that causes continuous airflow limitation. Spirometry is a common examination performed to assess lung function in COPD patients. Many patients have to repeat the test multiple times due to their limited breathing capacity. Meanwhile, CT scan results of COPD patients show an increase in dimensions of the thoracic cage, resulting in a barrel-shaped appearance of the chest cavity (barrel chest). Based on this observation, the severity of the disease can be assessed and monitored. Therefore, a measurement system for chest cavity expansion consisting of a measurement device and an application is proposed to monitor the progression of COPD in patients. However, this research focuses only on the design and construction of the measurement device. A qualitative approach was employed to describe the design and testing results of the developed measurement device. The Engineering Design Process method was used as a research approach to address complex problems in the context of technical design. The research resulted in a design for the measurement device with dimensions of 1.2 × 1.2 × 2 m. The testing of the measurement device demonstrated a functional system with an accuracy rate of 92.7017% and a precision rate of 99.4614% for phantom subject testing, as well as a precision rate of 98.1715% for human subject testing. Furthermore, three interrelated variables are involved in the examination using the measurement device, namely barrel chest ratio, body mass index, and severity classification.en_US
