Abstract

A speed bump is basically a raised surface about 3-5 inches from the road surface and it’s usually placed on roads that have high vehicle interaction. The kinetic energy released by vehicles when passing through speed bumps has the potential to be harvested for the fulfillment of renewable energy. In this study, energy harvesters from speed bumps will be designed to produce electrical energy, then the effect of vehicle weight and vehicle time interval will be seen on the output power of the system being built. The power output generated by the system will be used to supply 24 volt DC lamps and to charge the battery. In the measurement results it was found that when a vehicle weighing 275 Kg passed a speedbump with an interval of 6 seconds, the rotational speed obtained was 556 RPM where the generator power output that appeared was 14.2 watts with the circuit connected to the DC light load. With the same vehicle weight and the same time interval, but the circuit is connected to the battery load, a rotational speed of 424.9 RPM will be obtained, where the output power of the generator that appears is 31.5 watts. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the heavier the vehicle and the longer the duration of the vehicle when it passes a speed bump, the greater the generator power output will be.
