    Abstract
The discussion in this study is about the variety of languages with a sociolinguistic review. The purpose of this research is to find out the variety of languages of street children and the background of street children in the city of Medan. The source of data used in this research is information in recording and listening to informants of street children in the city of Medan. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. In the data collection stage, the researcher used the listening method using the Proficiency Free Listening technique (SBLC), recording technique. In the data analysis phase, the pragmatic equivalent method was used with the Sorting Elements technique. The stage of presenting the results of data analysis uses an informal presentation method. Sociolinguistic studies discuss the variety of languages and the functions of various languages. The theory used in this study is the theory of Martin Joos (in Alwasilah, 1985: 54) who argues that studying language is related to the use of language in society. The benefit of this research is to provide additional knowledge and understanding of the variety of languages of street children. The results of the study found 37 data on street children: 12 varieties of relaxed language, 11 varieties of business language, 8 varieties of familiar language, 6 varieties of official language. The most dominant variety of street children's language is casual language. What supports street children in the city of Medan are: micro level (Immediate causes), messo level (Underlying Causes), macro level (Basic Causes).
