    Abstract
This research explain about Ohakamairi in Japanese Society and the Ma’nene in the Toraja Tribe. This research aims to know detailed implementation ways of Ohakamairi and Ma’nene and functional ancestors between ancestors and humans in Japanese Society and the Toraja Tribe. This research uses a qualitative method with a comparative approach, and data collection with literature studies such as books, journals, articles, websites, and pictures as supported data. The theory in this research uses Culture Functionalism by Malinowski and Sacred and Profane by Emile Durkheim. The result of this research show Ohakamairi‘s ritual and Ma’nene‘s ritual have found similarities and differences. Similarities include the ritual procession, such as cemetery visits, cleaning up the graves, and praying for ancestor‘s objects. Schedule of the rituals are in August every year, done in 2 places, such as graves, and home. Rituals believed to ancestors respect media, strengthen between ancestors and family relationships-media. Differences Ohakamairi and Ma’nene are bringing the present by Japanese Society and Toraja Tribe when bringing it at the pilgrimage. Ohakamairi‘s procession does not need to pick up the corpse, but in Ma’nene there is a complex to pick up the corpse. Japanese Society gives a sign to graves based on ancestor‘s religion and Toraja Tribe gives a sign suitable to social status. Ohakamairi is a medium to emotionally support ancestors, and Ma’nene is an affection media or bond between humans and ancestors.
