Biochar is a solid material formed from the carbonization of biomass, usually called "activated charcoal". Biomass that can be used to make biochar can come from several agricultural and forestry wastes.
The pre-designed factory for making bio-char from empty oil palm bunches using a slow pyrolysis process has a production capacity of 150,000 tons/year and operates for 330 days a year. The number of empty oil palm bunches required to reach annual production capacity is 47,266.66 kg/hour.
The specific task completed was the detailed engineering design of a cyclone to separate char from the gas coming out of the reactor.
A factory for making bio-char from empty oil palm bunches using a slow pyrolysis process is planned to be established in Siak Regency, Riau Province. The land area required is 8,281 m2. The planned form of company organization is a Limited Liability Company (PT) with a line and staff organizational structure, and a total of 203 employees.
The results of the economic analysis on the pre-design of this factory are as follows:
• Capital Investment (CI) = Rp 577.914.516.171
• Total Cost (TC) = Rp 881.424.064.651
• Profit Margin (PM) = 21%
• Break Even Point (BEP) = 33,85%
• Return On Investment (ROI) = 35%
• Pay Out Time (POT) = 2,85 Years
• Internal Rate of Return (IRR) = 42,81%
From the results of the analysis of economic aspects, it can be concluded that a factory for making bio-char from empty oil palm bunches is feasible to establish.
