The increase in environmental pollution is caused by many things, such as population
growth which increases the amount of waste that must be disposed of. This is
exacerbated by inadequate final disposal sites, lack of public awareness and willingness
to manage and dispose of waste, as well as the unavailability of the public to recycle
waste because waste is considered dirty and must be thrown away or has no value. The
aim of this research is to determine the level of community participation in waste
management in Medan Marelan District, to determine the level of relationship between
factors that influence community participation and participation indicators.
Questionnaire data processing and the level of community participation using the
Spearman rank correlation test method. Based on the results of research in Medan
Marelan sub-district in 5 sub-districts, overall it was concluded that the level of
community participation in waste management which includes containerization,
collection/transportation and utilization of waste is included in the medium
participation level category with a percentage of 55.22%. Individual internal factors
such as age, gender, education level, employment status and income level are not all
related to indicators of waste storage, collection/transportation and utilization. Of these
factors, factors that are significantly related to the indicators are age, level of education
and income. External factors such as the role of government/community leaders have a
significant relationship with indicators of waste storage, collection/transportation and
utilization.
