    Abstract
Backgorund: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous unit. Acne vulgaris lesions consists of inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions. Increase of sebum production, epidermal follicular hiperproliferation, colonization of skin microflora, and inflammation play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) extract has been known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes. It is suspected that applying butterfly pea extract can have an effect for improvement acne vulgaris. Objective: To determine the effect of butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) extract on acne vulgaris. Subjects and Methods: This study is a clinical trial with pre-experimental with pretest-posttest design involving 30 subject ≥ 18 years old with acne vulgaris. Recording of basic data and subject examination and counting inflammatory and noninflammatory lesions before and after applying butterfly pea extract, as well as side effects and satisfaction levels. Data analyzed by Shapiro-Wilk test and continued with the Friedman test. Results: In this study, acne vulgaris was mostly found in the age group of 18-22 years, about 20 subjects (66.7%) with the majority of subjects being female (66.7%). There was a decrease in the number of inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions in acne vulgaris after being given butterfly pea flower extract cream (Clitoria ternatea L.) 5%, each of which showed a significant difference (p<0.001). Administration of butterfly pea extract did not cause any side effects at all in all research subjects. All subjects (100%) said they were satisfied with the changes experienced. Conclusion: Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) extract can have an effect for improvement acne vulgaris.
