A Description of Cultural Value in Traditional Proverbs of Batak Toba

Abstract

This paper is to describe the cultural values in life that are described in this Batak Toba proverb, namely umpasa and umpama. In writing this paper, the method used is descriptive-qualitative. The data source for this research is the proverbs used by the Batak Toba community during traditional events. The technique used to describe this data is to take several steps; the author also takes information from various sources, such as books, the internet, community leaders, and the indigenous Batak community, to get information and get umpasa and umpama . In applying this method, the author takes several steps, such as selecting umpasa and umpama to use. After describing umpasa and umpama, the author found several differences between umpasa and umpama, namely: umpasa in Indonesian is pantun and umpama is more towards proverbs, and umpasa can be added a few words to complete the umpasa, while umpama cannot be added.
