Abstract

The objective of this final assignment is to find out the preservation activities in static archives at the Library and Archive Agency of Medan. The data are gathered by conducting literature view, observation, interview, and documentation. The activities include I) storing files such as file depot, file shelves, and file boxes, 2) in handling files; it is not allowed to eat, drink, and smoke. Hands should be free from water, food, and oil, as well as any other dirt. Files are not allowed to be bent because they will be marred. Your index finger should not be wet with your saliva in turning the pages. Do not put anything on the files/boxes because it will press them, 3) integrated pest handling is done by fumigation, 4) no one except librarians enters the file room; those who want to enter it should get permission, 5) reproduction is done by reduplicating files into one type of media or the same media with different medium alteration, using scanner, and 6) damage handling is done by inspecting the building and other potential factors. Cleaning up and maintenance are done regularly in all parts of the building and its environment, installing fire detecting device, extinguishing system, ad water detecting alarm, and making copies of important files.
