Generative propagation of Mucuna bracteata is very
difficult due to the hard seed coat so that for germination it is necessary to break the
dormancy of the seeds. Then a dormancy breaking technique is needed using a chemical
substance, namely NaOCl. The use of NaOCl must pay attention to the duration of
immersion so as not to damage the embryo. This research was conducted from February
to May 2023 at the Seed Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of
North Sumatra, Medan using a completely randomized design with two treatment factors.
The first factor was the concentration of NaOCl with 5 levels, namely 0%, 2.5%, 5%,
7.5% and 10%. The second factor is the immersion time with 3 levels, namely 2 hours, 4
hours and 6 hours. Parameters observed were seed water uptake, germination
percentage, germination rate, vigor index, seedling height, root length, fresh weight and
dry weight. The results showed that the concentration of NaOCl significantly affected all
parameters. The soaking time of NaOCl significantly affected the parameters of seed
water absorption, germination percentage, germination rate, vigor index, seedling height,
fresh weight and dry weight. The interaction of the two treatments significantly affected
the parameters of seed water absorption, germination percentage, germination rate,
vigor index, root length, fresh weight and dry weight. The best combination is 7.5%
NaOCl concentration with time immersion 4 hours.
