    Abstract
    The pre-designed factory for making novolac resin from phenol and formaldehyde has a production capacity of 11,500 tons/year and operates 330 days a year. The main process in the pre-design of this factory consists of four stages, namely the raw material storage stage, the raw material preparation stage, the novolac resin formation stage, and the purification stage. In the polymerization reaction stage, a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor used. In the reactor, the reaction takes place for 1 hour at a temperature of 95oC and a pressure of 1 atm. The amount of phenol required to achieve annual production capacity is 1,418,281 kg/hour. The specific task completed was the engineering design of an evaporator for purifying novolac resin. The planned form of organization of this company is Perseroan Terbatas (PT) with a line and staff organizational structure. The number of workers needed to run the factory is 170 employes. Novolac resin manufacturing is planned to be in Kawasan Ekonomi Khusus Sei Mangkei, in Perdagangan City, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra with a plant area of 14,736 m2. 998.4805 kg/hour of water needed for this plant are supplied from the clean water processing unit of the Kawasan Ekonomi Khusus Sei Mangkei. The results of the economic analysis of this thesis are as follows: 1. Capital Investment (CI) = Rp. 115.623.453.297 2. Total Cost (TC) = Rp. 445.380.310.600 3. Total Sales = Rp. 574.999.840.800 4. Net Profit = Rp. 90.430.002.784 5. Profit margin (PM) = 22,43% 6. Break even point (BEP) = 42,47% 7. Return on investment (ROI) = 17,47% 8. Pay out time (POT) = 5,7 years 9. Return on network (RON) = 29,12% 10. Internal rate of return (IRR) = 21,20% Based on the results of economic analysis, it can be concluded that the novolac resin from phenol and formaldehyde manufacturing plant process is feasible to be established.
