    Abstract
Sipirok Botanical Garden is a forest with a various types of understory plants, the diversity of understory plants at that area is not yet known. The purpose of this research was to analyze the composition of lower plants in the Sipirok Botanical Garden, South Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra. This study was conducted from January to August 2023. The research locations were determined by using purposive sampling method, comprising a total of 100 plots, each measuring 2m x 2m. Vegetation data were analyzed using Importance Value Index (IVI), Diversity Index (H’), Evenness Index (E), and Similarity Index (IS). The results showed that in block 3A there were 28 species and 16 families found with the highest importance value index (IVI) was 18,11%, which was Miconia crenata. Block 1B found 22 species and 16 families with the highest IVI value of 27,59%, namely Selaginella wildenowii. Block 12B found 34 species and 22 families with the highest IVI value of 20,45% which was Selaginella wildenowii. Block 5F found 23 species and 13 families with the highest IVI value of 32,21% was Selaginella wildenowii. Block 7G with 22 species and 14 families with the highest IVI value of 32,60% also on Selaginella wildenowii. From the entire research block, 55 species and 28 families were found with the highest IVI value of 25,15% on Sellaginella wildenowii. The diversity index of lower plants was high at 3,29. The similarity index of lower plants was classified as high 0, 94. The highest similarity index on blocks 5F and 7G was 57% while the smallest was on blocks 3A and 1B and blocks 3A and 7G which had the same percentage of about 23%.
